Wednesday, August 19th, 35.7 miles and 2288 accumulated vertical feet up.
This was going to be light day because of the large amount of vertical I have to peddle tomorrow and the large amounts previously peddled on Monday and Tuesday. Things worked out well. Nice ride from Basin to Butte. All good road conditions despite an early sign. So as we are leaving the campground we ran into a middle aged couple who are riding North to South and started in Canmore Alberta. They spent the night in the Basin Community Center (said it was great) they got caught in a downpour while we were still fighting the terrible trail conditions yesterday and thought the community center would be better than the campground. They are from Joyce, Washington. Ken & Barb, hope we run into them again soon.
Breakfast, Don’t tell Jenny but their pancakes are GREAT! I had 3 huge pancakes and two eggs…. Side Bar to this story: we asked our waitress what people do in Basin (because it’s a small town looking like so many we peddle thru. Most of the buildings are empty and in disrepair, there’s no industry, there’s abandoned vehicles and machines everywhere, usually a few older mobile homes, run down RV’s , no gas station, no grocery, maybe a church or so and always a Post Office) Well, her response was more truthful than we expected “mostly drink” then she explained that a few of the men work for the county, there’s a local power line construction company a few work for. Absolutely wonderful Ken. Hope you are enjoying this trip. You are a mad man. I’m in the mood for pancakes all of a sudden.
I’m enjoying following your journey from my easy chair here in Cincinnati. By the way, my grandfather mined in Butte, Montana for several years. Butte was once a massive town, but now it is a shadow of its past, with a environmental issue left from copper mining.
