Tuesday, September 1st, 59.8 miles and 1615 accumulated vertical feet up.
As you know we had the perfect wild camping spot for last night. Until about midnight, it started lightly raining and rained until about 6am. Then when we were about 90% packed it started raining again, light but continuous, we left camp and had a few hundred feet to climb before we were to start descending. At about 9100 feet of elevation and about 2 miles into today’s ride the rain got heavier and there was frozen rain mixed in. We stopped and sheltered in the woods and gave the weather about 30 minutes to figure its self out. Rain eased up and off we went. It rained for about the next 3 hours. The gravel/sandy dirt road was slippery, mushy in spots, covered with puddles and in the typical ACA & GDMBR style rough with stones and cobbles and ruts. Sorry no pictures, the ride was just to difficult to take pics. I’m officially saying this was the worst experience of this adventure so far…. Rain stopped, we rode on for about an hour and found a nice rustic lodge with a restaurant, lunch!!!!
Wednesday , September 2nd, 46.1 miles and 1624 accumulated vertical feet up.
It’s weird but staying in a hotel is not as relaxing as well even, wild camping or camping in a campground. However it’s necessary I guess. So here’s the thing, you get to a hotel and you have to take a shower, no showers at most of the campsites we’ve stayed in. Then you must do laundry and that’s a process. And there’s finding dinner, when camping we open our panniers and there’s the food, light the MSR stove, boil water stir and you’re eating. In a hotel we barely had time to google up a restaurant, figure out if we should walk there, or bike there or get them to deliver, if we go it’s going to take 1 1/2 hours and who’s going to finish the laundry. We got delivery last night but it was 9 before we finished eating and I’m usually on my back in the tent by 8!! Heck tonight we are all in our tents before 6:30….But the beds sure felt nice.
This morning— because all of us are basically out of supplies we needed to stop at several stores. We will need to be carrying a big supply because the plan calls for us to be wild camping the next 3 nights in the middle of the Wyoming Great Divide Basin (desert). Our supply stops: first an outdoor supply store (507 Mercantile) then a specialty camping store (Outdoor Supply of Pinedale) then the grocery (Riley’s) then an Ace Hardware and then a Dollar General. It was almost 10 before we got rolling.
Today was a good day! We rode most of the day in the Great Divide Basin of Wyoming, to the east/north we continuously see the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains.
