The link above will take you to the route map. This is the first leg of the GDMBR in Montana. My friend John C. Is updating my location often. I’ll try to add a revised link every time the Adventure Cycling Association has us riding on a new segment of the route.
First thing Sunday in the morning there was the matter of leaving Polebridge

I walked into the kitchen this morning and chatted with the the guy who runs the North Fork Hostel. His name is Oliver, 35 years ago he was a young traveler from Germany. He arrived here and enjoyed his stay so much that when he was finished with his bike packing trip that year he came back to Polebridge and started working here and eventually was recruited to run the hostel. Now he’s actively looking for someone to take over for him so he can do some bicycle touring. Very interesting guy, he works for the US forest service and stays in Polebridge year round. Most of his family remained in Germany, his Dad is 88 this year and still rides his bike!

This day we are moving on to 2nd breakfast quite early, like five minutes after 1st breakfast. The Polebridge Mercantile has fresh baked giant Huckleberry Bear claws and I got this absurdly delicious and large fresh Cinnamon Roll, with unsweetened tea and a huge egg, cheese, & sausage breakfast sandwich wrapped in foil for 3rd breakfast.

Sunday was a special day. I’ve been on the road 21 days and I’m missing my connection with the close people in my life. Phone service has been next to nonexistent, I’m 2 hours ahead of everybody at home and this adventure is physically exhausting. But today I arranged to meet my very good and long time friends Tom & Carol R. In a campground just a few miles off the GDMBR near Whitefish Montana. They cooked a great dinner, we had a beer, I set up my tent behind their camper van and tomorrow Tom will join me for a 40 plus mile ride on the GDMBR.

Note about Whitefish State Park Campground: there is a very busy set of railroad tracks adjacent to the campground and the trains run all night and some are very noisy….
Monday day 17, August 10th, 46.9 miles and 1647 accumulated vertical feet up.
Still smoke, not as bad as the last several days, and it didn’t bother me like it has been. The route today was through mostly rural residential or hobby farming areas from the town of Whitefish, through Columbia Falls, and into Big Fork so we saw some placid countryside.

Day off the bike on Tuesday, then back at it on Wednesday.
