Great Divide Mountain Bike Route Day 10 & 11

Monday, August 31st REST DAY in Banff, Alberta

Great to have 2 very comfortable nights in a hotel. Come here for a vacation, there’s lots to do and it’s beautiful. Hardly any smoke today so I took a couple of pictures.

Bow River and Clear Skies, love the water color
Downtown Banff from Banff Street
Downtown Banff from Bear Street

Cascades of Time Garden

Cascades of Time Garden—Pergola/Bridge/Nice Carpentry
Nice Stone Masonry on Bridge, G. Langy????
Banff Park Museum this is a must visit
Hundreds of Spectacular Mounts & the Restored Douglas Fir Woodworking is Out of My League
Put Sealant in Both tires (inside the tubes) Today. Not John C. Recommended but I think Jim P. Will Approve, hotel room made for a good work shop and hopefully no more flats.

Tuesday, August 4th, 52.7 miles and 3500 accumulated vertical feet up.

Beautiful day, sun is out smoke is very thin no rain in the forecast and only light winds. GDMBR exits Banff on the south side just as it passes this amazing hotel.

Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel

Quickly the Adventure Cycling Association puts you to the test, for the next 20 plus miles here are the trails you get. They are rough and at spots steep and cobbly and surrounded by beautiful mountains:

Easy at First
Washed Out in Places
Some Really nice Bridges
Mountains Everywhere
Streams are Abundant
Stream
Waterfalls
Trail Getting Rougher
Detour to “High Rockies Alternate” main trail is washed out.
2nd Breakfast Location, foil wrapped Pizza left from last night…
Another Stream
Getting Good Now
Stream Crossing
Goat Pond
Nice Bicycle Boardwalk
Spray Lake, beautiful setting and I followed the East side for a long time
This guy drove past me several times, Hauling stones, always curtitious swinging wide and slowing down to keep the dust to a minimum. But this time he stopped and got out to tell me he has been seeing several Brown Bears about 5 miles ahead playing around the road all day— well that’s nice!!!
These Cyclists Need to be Congratulated they are North Bounders (started in New Mexico) and today they are going to finish in Banff. Didn’t get their names but she is from Australia and He is from England. Took them 2 1/2 months….
Here they are I had to just wait for them to go away
Running away
This is as close as I got, just across the road, zoom he/she has been collared
Beautiful pond along the road
End of the Day and More Mountains
View from Front of my Campsite

Today the trail portion of the ride was tough and the dust kicked up by passing cars on that gravel road was frustrating. The gravel road was also VERY washboard textured and made it difficult to find a path. But I’m laying here typing thinking about what a great day it was!!!

Also I’m sharing my campsite with a 56 year old guy (Jarred) from Australia who started the GDMBR today just a bit later than me (he Started in Banff), he’s going to be riding much more aggressively than I. Earlier today I ran into Justin and he also started today and is trying to find someone to ride South with— he camped about 5 miles down from here and wants to meet at 8:30 tomorrow morning….

Good Night Everybody !
